WHAT IS PHONETICS ? Phonetics (from the Greek word “phone”= sound/voice) is a fundamental branch of linguistics 1. phonetics is the study of the articulatory and acoustic properties of the sounds of human language. 2. Phonetics is the study of the sounds of language.  These sounds are called phonemes.

Phonemes include all significant differences of sound, including features of voicing, place and manner of articulation, accents, and secondary features of nasalization and labialization. Phonem mencakup semua perbedaan yang signifikan antara suara, termasuk fitur dari menyuarakan, tempat dan cara artikulasi, aksen, dan fitur sekunder nasalisasi dan hal mengucapkan bunyi dgn bibir.

 Fonetika modern diawali oleh Alexander Melville Bell melalui bukunya Visible Speech (1867) yang memperkenalkan suatu sistem penulisan bunyi-bunyi bahasa secara teliti dan teratur. Ilmu fonetik kemudian berkembang dengan pesat di akhir abad ke-19 akibat ditemukannya fonograf, yang membantu perekaman bunyi-bunyi bahasa.
        Di dalam buku di jelaskan bahwa ika kita mengucapkan bahasa inggris ada baiknya kita mempelajari apa itu phonetic symbol.

        Simbol-simbol itu disebut the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). atau sederhananya disebut Phonetic Symbols.
